Shloka 20

अभ्यद्रवन्त देवांस्ते सहस्नाणि दशैव हि । ततस्तैरदिता देवा: शरणं वासवं ययु:

abhyadravant devāṁs te sahasrāṇi daśaiva hi | tatas tair aditā devāḥ śaraṇaṁ vāsavaṁ yayuḥ ||

Bhīṣma sprach: Jene Angreifer stürmten auf die Götter los—wahrlich, ihrer waren zehntausend. Von ihnen bedrängt und überwältigt, flohen die Götter, schwer gequält, und suchten Zuflucht bei Vāsava (Indra). Die Begebenheit betont eine wiederkehrende Ethik der Mahābhārata: Wird Macht missbraucht, um andere zu peinigen, suchen die Bedrängten rechtmäßigen Schutz, und Führung erweist sich in der Pflicht, zu bergen und Ordnung wiederherzustellen.
