अध्याय १६ — शङ्कर-उमा-वरदानम् तथा तण्डि-स्तुतिः (Śaṅkara–Umā Boon-Granting and Taṇḍi’s Hymn)

दशनामसहस््राणि देवेष्वाह पितामह: । शर्वस्य शास्त्रेषु तथा दशनामशतानि च,पितामह ब्रह्माने पूर्वकालमें देवताओंके निकट महादेवजीके दस हजार नाम बताये थे और शास्‍्त्रोंमें भी उनके सहस्र नाम वर्णित हैं

daśanāmasahasrāṇi deveṣv āha pitāmahaḥ | śarvasya śāstreṣu tathā daśanāmaśatāni ca ||

Vāyu sprach: „In früheren Zeiten verkündete der Ahnvater (Brahmā) den Göttern die zehntausend Namen Śarvas (Śivas). Ebenso verzeichnen die Schriften auch Hunderte seiner Namen.“ Die Aussage betont, dass man sich dem Göttlichen durch viele Beinamen nähert und dass das ehrfürchtige Gedenken des Namens (nāma) ein von der Überlieferung bestätigter Weg der Hingabe ist.
