Shloka 20

शुभाशुभानि कर्माणि मृत्यु: कालश्न सर्वश: । विश्वेदेवा: पितृगणा मूर्तिमन्तस्तपोधना:

bhīṣma uvāca | śubhāśubhāni karmāṇi mṛtyuḥ kālaś ca sarvaśaḥ | viśvedevāḥ pitṛgaṇā mūrtimantas tapodhanāḥ ||

Bhīṣma sprach: „Alle heilsamen und unheilsamen Taten werden vollständig von Tod und Zeit beobachtet. Auch die Viśvedevas und die verkörperten Scharen der Pitṛs—reich an asketischem Verdienst—halten Wacht. Obgleich unsichtbar, schauen diese göttlichen Zeugen das Verhalten aller Wesen und, wenn man ihrer gedenkt und sie preist, verleihen sie angemessene Früchte und stützen so die sittliche Ordnung der Welt.“
