त्रैविद्यो ब्राह्मणो विद्वानू न चाध्ययनजीवक: । त्रिकर्मा त्रिपरिक्रान्तो मैत्र एष स्मृतो द्विज:
traividyo brāhmaṇo vidvān na cādhyayanajīvakaḥ | trikarmā triparikrānto maitra eṣa smṛto dvijaḥ ||
Mahādeva sprach: Wahrhaft als brāhmaṇa—als „Zweimalgeborener“ (dvija)—gilt ein Mann, wenn er in den drei Veden gelehrt ist, seinen Lebensunterhalt nicht durch Lehren oder Rezitation bestreitet, beständig die drei heiligen Pflichten vollzieht (Opfer, Gabe und rechtschaffene Lebensführung), die drei inneren Feinde (Begierde, Zorn und Gier) überwunden hat und allen Wesen gegenüber eine Haltung der Freundschaft bewahrt.
