Gautama–Śakra Saṃvāda: Karma, Loka-bheda, and the Restoration of the Elephant

गौतम उवाच यत्र प्रेतो नंदति पुण्यकर्मा यत्र प्रेत: शोचते पापकर्मा । वैवस्वतस्य सदने महात्मं- स्तत्र त्वाहं हस्तिनं यातयिष्ये

gautama uvāca | yatra preto nandati puṇyakarmā yatra pretaḥ śocati pāpakarmā | vaivasvatasya sadane mahātmans tatra tvāhaṃ hastinaṃ yātayiṣye ||

Gautama sprach: „O Großherziger, eben aus der Wohnstatt des Vaivasvata (Yama) — aus jenem Reich, wo der Verstorbene mit verdienstvollen Taten sich freut und der Verstorbene mit sündhaften Taten in Kummer versinkt — von dort werde ich erzwingen, dass dieser Elefant zurückgegeben wird.“
