Educational Q&A

The verse distinguishes duties by social-ethical role (varna-dharma): a Brahmin learned in Brahman may accept gifts as a livelihood, whereas a Kshatriya should not live by receiving gifts. The king’s proper ethic is generosity—supporting the twice-born through rightful giving rather than taking.

In a dialogue context (Aṣṭaka speaking, with Yayāti’s words quoted), Yayāti explains his stance on propriety: he rejects the idea of living by accepting gifts and recalls that he previously upheld royal duty by regularly giving donations to worthy Brahmins.
