Yayāti and the Grandsons: Discourse on Lokas, Dāna, and Satya

Educational Q&A

Harsh, piercing speech that hurts others is a mark of deep inauspiciousness and inner poverty; ethical living includes restraint and sweetness of speech, since words can wound like weapons.

Śakra (Indra) is instructing about moral conduct by identifying the cruel, sharp-tongued person as the most unfortunate, using vivid imagery that such a person carries a bound demoness in the mouth—i.e., bitter speech itself becomes a malevolent force.
