Yayāti–Devayānī Dialogue and Śukra’s Consent

Educational Q&A

Dharma is upheld by clearly defined limits (sīmā) and socially binding norms (maryādā) grounded in śāstric prescriptions; such rules gain legitimacy when acknowledged by the virtuous, the learned, teachers and students, and even the gods.

The narrator-speaker (Vaiśampāyana) proclaims an instituted ordinance concerning brahminical dharma, urging all constituencies—good people, brahmins, disciplined students, gods, and the wider world—to hear and accept this established boundary of conduct.
