Chapter 74: Non-anger, Forbearance, and the Ethics of Residence
अतो हास्यतरं लोके किंचिदन्यन्न विद्यते | यत्र दुर्जनमित्याह दुर्जन: सज्जनं स्वयम्,संसारमें इससे बढ़कर हँसीकी दूसरी कोई बात नहीं हो सकती कि जो दुर्जन हैं, वे स्वयं ही सज्जन पुरुषोंको दुर्जन कहते हैं
ato hāsyataraṁ loke kiṁcid anyan na vidyate | yatra durjanam ity āha durjanaḥ sajjanaṁ svayam ||
„Nichts ist in dieser Welt lächerlicher als dies: dass ein Böser selbst einen Guten ‚böse‘ nennt.“
दुष्यन्त उवाच
Moral judgment is often distorted by one’s own character: the truly wicked may project their faults onto the virtuous and label them ‘wicked.’ The verse warns against trusting slander from corrupt sources and urges discernment in evaluating people.
Duṣyanta comments on the irony of social accusation: he observes that it is supremely ridiculous when a bad person denounces a good person as bad—highlighting the inversion of values that can occur in human society.
