Chapter 74: Non-anger, Forbearance, and the Ethics of Residence
यथा मत्सड़मे पूर्व यः कृत: समयस्त्वया । त॑ स्मरस्व महाभाग कण्वाश्रमपदं प्रति,महाभाग! आपने कण्वके आश्रमपर मेरे साथ समागमके समय पहले जो प्रतिज्ञा की थी, उसका इस समय स्मरण कीजिये
yathā matsaṅgame pūrvaḥ yaḥ kṛtaḥ samayas tvayā | taṁ smarasva mahābhāga kaṇvāśramapadaṁ prati ||
Duṣyanta sprach: „O Edle, erinnere dich jetzt an das Gelöbnis, das du mir einst zur Zeit unserer Vereinigung dort in Kanvas Einsiedelei gabst.“
दुष्यन्त उवाच
The verse foregrounds the ethical weight of a samaya (pledge): intimacy and personal desire are not separate from dharma; one must remember and uphold commitments made, especially when they affect another’s honor and future.
Duṣyanta addresses the woman he earlier met at Kaṇva’s hermitage, urging her to recall the promise she made during their union—invoking that prior agreement as the basis for what he expects now.
