Duḥṣanta–Śakuntalā: Gandharva Marriage and Succession Condition
य॑ य॑ देवं त्वमेतेन मन्त्रेणावाहयिष्यसि । तस्य तस्य प्रसादात् त्वं देवि पुत्राउजनिष्यसि,'देवि! तुम इस मन्त्रद्वारा जिस-जिस देवताका आवाहन करोगी, उसी-उसीके कृपाप्रसादसे पुत्र उत्पन्न करोगी”
yaṃ yaṃ devaṃ tvam etena mantreṇāvāhayiṣyasi | tasya tasya prasādāt tvaṃ devi putrān ajaniṣyasi ||
Vaiśampāyana sprach: „O Frau, einer Göttin gleich: Welche Gottheit du auch immer mit diesem Mantra herbeirufst, durch die Gnade eben dieser Gottheit wirst du Söhne gebären.“
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse frames progeny as arising through a combination of human agency (invoking with a mantra) and divine grace (prasāda). It highlights the ethical-religious idea that outcomes, especially extraordinary ones, are granted through sanctioned means and the favor of the invoked deity.
In the Adi Parva account surrounding Kuntī’s boon, the narrator explains the efficacy of a mantra: whichever god she calls using it will, by that god’s favor, grant her sons—setting up the divine births of key figures in the epic.
