शौनक उवाच
The verse highlights the dharmic importance of preserving and extending a royal lineage: a ‘puṇyakīrti’ figure is praised for ensuring continuity of Śāntanu’s dynasty by bringing forth heirs, linking personal merit (puṇya) with responsibility toward family and kingdom.
Śaunaka identifies and praises the person responsible for the births of Pāṇḍu, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, and Vidura—an act undertaken to continue Śāntanu’s line—thereby setting up the genealogical background for the Kuru succession and the later conflict.
