Shloka 18

आदि पर्व, अध्याय ३८ — शमीक-उपदेशः, शाप-संदेशः, तक्षक-प्रसङ्गः (Śamīka’s counsel, the curse-message, and Takṣaka’s approach)

so ’ham evaṁ prapaśyāmi vāsuke bhaginīṁ tava | jaratkārur iti khyātāṁ tāṁ tasmai pratipādaya ||

Educational Q&A

A leader must act decisively for the protection of the community, even through difficult personal decisions; here, a lawful marriage alliance is presented as the dharmic means to avert a collective calamity caused by a curse.

Elāpatra advises the Nāga-king Vāsuki to give his sister Jaratkāru in marriage to the sage Jaratkāru, because this union is understood to be the effective means to free the Nāgas from the impending danger arising from a curse.
