संशयो वह्लिरागच्छेद् दृष्टं वायोर्निवर्तनम् । मृत्यु्नों बिलवासिभ्यो बिले स्याजन्नात्र संशय:,आग यहाँतक आयेगी, इसमें संदेह है; क्योंकि वायुके वेगसे अग्निका दूसरी ओर पलट जाना भी देखा गया है। परंतु बिलमें तो उसके भीतर रहनेवाले जीवोंसे हमारी मृत्यु होनेमें कोई संशय ही नहीं है
saṁśayo vahnir āgacched dṛṣṭaṁ vāyor nivartanam | mṛtyur no bilavāsibhyo bile syāj nâtra saṁśayaḥ ||
Vaiśampāyana sprach: „Es ist möglich, dass das Feuer uns sogar erreicht—hier bleibt Raum für Zweifel—denn man hat gesehen, wie ein starker Wind die Flammen in die entgegengesetzte Richtung zurücktreibt. Doch was das Hineingehen in den Bau betrifft, gibt es keinerlei Zweifel: Dort würde uns der Tod gewiss durch die Hand der Wesen treffen, die darin wohnen.“
