Chapter 213
उलूप्युवाच ऐरावतकुले जात: कौरव्यो नाम पन्नग: । तस्यास्मि दुहिता राजन्नुलूपी नाम पन्नगी,उलूपीने कहा--राजन्! ऐरावत नागके कुलमें कौरव्य नामक नाग उत्पन्न हुए हैं, मैं उन्हींकी पुत्री नागिन हूँ। मेरा नाम उलूपी है
ulūpy uvāca—airāvatakule jātaḥ kauravyo nāma pannagaḥ | tasyāsmi duhitā rājann ulūpī nāma pannagī ||
Ulūpī sprach: „O König, im Geschlecht Airāvatas wurde ein Nāga namens Kauravya geboren. Ich bin seine Tochter, o König – eine Nāga-Jungfrau namens Ulūpī.“
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse foregrounds the importance of lineage and truthful self-identification in epic discourse: one establishes credibility and social location by naming one’s ancestry and personal name before further action or request.
Ulūpī introduces herself to the king, stating her Nāga lineage (Airāvata’s clan), naming her father Kauravya, and declaring her own name, thereby setting the context for the ensuing interaction.
