Parāśara’s Birth, Vasiṣṭha as Guardian, and the Bhṛgu–Kṣatriya Violence Etiology (Ādi-parva 169)
एवमुक्ता ततः कन्या देवं वरदमब्रवीत् । एकमिच्छाम्यहं देव त्वत्प्रसादात् पतिं प्रभो,उनके ऐसा कहनेपर वह कन्या उन वरदायक देवता भगवान् शिवसे इस प्रकार बोली -- देव! प्रभो! मैं आपकी कृपासे एक ही पति चाहती हूँ
evamuktā tataḥ kanyā devaṃ varadam abravīt | ekam icchāmy ahaṃ deva tvatprasādāt patiṃ prabho ||
Als sie dies vernommen hatte, sprach die Jungfrau zu der Gottheit, die Gaben verleiht: „O Gott, o Herr — durch deine Gnade wünsche ich nur einen einzigen Gatten.“
व्यास उवाच
The verse highlights an ethical preference for singular marital commitment and clarity of household duty (gṛhastha-dharma), expressed as a deliberate choice even in the presence of divine power to grant exceptional boons.
After being spoken to, the maiden addresses the boon-giving deity and makes her request: she asks, by the deity’s grace, for only one husband.
