Vāraṇāvata-vivāsana-nīti: Dhṛtarāṣṭra and Duryodhana’s Policy Dialogue

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights proper conduct when approaching a revered teacher: one should come respectfully (often with companions/disciples), and clearly state one’s name and lineage. This reflects the Mahābhārata’s emphasis on ācāra (right etiquette) as part of dharma, especially in the guru–śiṣya context.

Droṇa, accompanied by his disciples, goes to Paraśurāma—celebrated as the foremost of the Bhṛgu lineage—and formally introduces himself by giving his name and stating that he is of the Āṅgirasa line. This sets the stage for seeking instruction/association with the renowned master.
