Pāṇḍu’s Gifts, Forest Residence, and Vidura’s Marriage
कि तु मातुः स वैगुण्यादन्ध एव भविष्यति । तस्य तद् वचन श्रुत्वा माता पुत्रमथाब्रवीत्
ki tu mātuḥ sa vaiguṇyād andha eva bhaviṣyati | tasya tad vacanaṃ śrutvā mātā putram athābravīt ||
Vaiśampāyana sprach: «Doch aufgrund eines Mangels auf Seiten der Mutter wird er wahrhaftig blind geboren werden.» Als die Mutter diese Worte hörte, sprach sie zu ihrem Sohn.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights causality and moral responsibility within familial and generational contexts: outcomes (here, blindness) are presented as arising from specific conditions or faults, prompting reflection on accountability, compassion, and the ethical handling of consequences.
The narrator states that the child will be blind due to a defect attributed to the mother; upon hearing this pronouncement, the mother responds by speaking to her son, indicating an immediate emotional and ethical reaction to the foretold condition.
