Karna’s Birth, Gift-Ethic, and the Name Vaikartana
शान्तनोरपि संतान यथा स्यादक्षयं भुवि | तत् ते धर्म प्रवक्ष्यामि क्षात्रं राज्ञि सनातनम्,“राजमाता! महाराज शान्तनुकी संतानपरम्परा भी जिस उपायसे इस भूतलपर अक्षय बनी रहे, वह धर्मयुक्त उपाय मैं तुम्हें बतलाऊँगा। वह सनातन क्षत्रियधर्म है
śāntanor api santāna yathā syād akṣayaṃ bhuvi | tat te dharma pravakṣyāmi kṣātraṃ rājñi sanātanam ||
Vaiśampāyana sprach: „O Königin, ich werde dir das Dharma darlegen, durch das selbst die Linie König Śāntanus auf Erden unvergänglich bleiben kann. Ich werde dich jenes uralte, dauerhafte kṣatriyische Gesetz lehren — königliche Pflicht, in Rechtschaffenheit gegründet — durch das eine Dynastie bewahrt wird.“
