Educational Q&A

The verse foregrounds a common Mahābhārata ethical tension: powerful figures encounter beauty and desire, and the next step—how one inquires, acts, and respects social and personal boundaries—becomes a test of dharma.

The narrator states that a king sees a remarkably beautiful, dark-eyed maiden from the fisherfolk community and, immediately upon seeing her, begins to question her—setting up the ensuing dialogue and its consequences.
