शार इत्येव शीर्णे तु नानार्थो धातु रुच्यते / एकर्णवे ततस्तस्मिन्नष्टे स्थावर जङ्गमे / तदा भवति स ब्रह्मा सहस्राक्षः सहस्रपात्

Die Wurzel ‘śāra’ wird in der Bedeutung von ‘śīrṇa’ (zerfallen) vielfach gedeutet. Als im einen Ozean der Pralaya alles Unbewegte und Bewegte vernichtet war, wurde Brahma der Tausendäugige und Tausendfüßige.
