Diti’s Puṁsavana Vow, Indra’s Intervention, and the Birth of the Maruts
अहो अर्थेन्द्रियारामो योषिन्मय्येह मायया । गृहीतचेता: कृपण: पतिष्ये नरके ध्रुवम् ॥ ३९ ॥
aho arthendriyārāmo yoṣin-mayyeha māyayā gṛhīta-cetāḥ kṛpaṇaḥ patiṣye narake dhruvam
Kaśyapa Muni dachte: „Weh mir! Ich bin allzu sehr an Reichtum und Sinnenfreuden gebunden. Dies ausnutzend hat die māyā der Höchsten Persönlichkeit Gottes in Gestalt einer Frau (meiner Gattin) meinen Geist gefangen. Darum bin ich elend und werde gewiss dem Höllenreich entgegengleiten.“
This verse warns that absorption in artha (wealth) and indriya-sukha (sense enjoyment), fueled by māyā, captures the mind and leads to spiritual ruin and suffering.
In remorse over his conduct and the power of illusion, Indra condemns his own materialistic, lust-driven mentality as spiritually miserly and therefore deserving of severe karmic consequence.
Use it as a check on priorities: reduce compulsive sense indulgence, practice self-restraint, and redirect the mind toward dharma and devotion rather than wealth-and-pleasure obsession.
