Chapter 49 — मत्स्यादिलक्षणवर्णनम्
Description of the Characteristics of Matsya and the Other Incarnations

Bhagavan (Lord Agni as narrator of the Agni Purana’s discourse)

Concept: Avatāra principle: the divine assumes appropriate forms for cosmic protection and instruction; classification begins with observable lakṣaṇa.
Application: Use as a teaching cue to present Daśāvatāra sequence; in pūjā, select the avatāra form appropriate to the vow/festival (e.g., Matsya/Kūrma days in some traditions).

It gives a definitional (lakṣaṇa) key for identifying avatāras by iconographic form—Matsya as fish-form and Kūrma as tortoise-form—serving as a taxonomy for later devotional recitation and recognition.
It functions like a catalogue entry: the text shifts chapters and introduces a systematic description of the ten avatāras, exemplifying the Agni Purāṇa’s compendium style—organizing theology and iconography into concise definitions.
Knowing and correctly recognizing the avatāras supports proper remembrance (smaraṇa) and praise (stotra), which Purāṇic tradition treats as meritorious and purifying through devotion to the Lord’s saving manifestations.
