Jaṭilāvatāra-Parīkṣā: Pārvatyāḥ Tapasāṃ Parīkṣaṇam
The Jaṭilā Episode and the Testing of Pārvatī’s Austerity
जानाम्यहं च तं रुद्रं शृणु त्वम्प्रवदामि ते । वृषध्वजस्स रुद्रो हि विकृतात्मा जटाधरः
jānāmyahaṃ ca taṃ rudraṃ śṛṇu tvampravadāmi te | vṛṣadhvajassa rudro hi vikṛtātmā jaṭādharaḥ
আমি সেই রুদ্রকে জানি; শোনো, তোমাকে বলছি। তিনি বৃষধ্বজ রুদ্রই—অদ্ভুত, অতিলৌকিক স্বভাবের—এবং জটাধারী প্রভু।
Suta Goswami (narrating the Shiva Purana to the sages, typical Shatarudra discourse style)
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Rudra
Type: stotra
The verse affirms Rudra as knowable and describable through His sacred attributes (bull-emblem, matted hair), guiding the devotee to contemplate Saguna Shiva as a doorway to the Supreme who transcends ordinary nature (vikṛtātmā).
By naming Rudra as Vṛṣadhvaja and Jaṭādhara, the text points to concrete devotional identifiers used in Linga and murti worship—supporting focused bhakti and dhyāna on Shiva’s gracious, manifest form while remembering His transcendence.
Meditate on Shiva as Vṛṣadhvaja (with Nandi) and Jaṭādhara while chanting the Panchakshara mantra “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”; optionally accompany with Tripuṇḍra (bhasma) and Rudrāksha as aids to steady remembrance.
