Sukta 8.37

Devata

Indra

Chandas

Jagatī (likely; recurring refrain with mādhyandina-savana)

Inside Sukta 37

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

The hymn pushes forward the brahman (mantric power) and the Soma-presser, calling Indra with “all succours” to the midday pressing to drink Soma.

  2. Development

Indra is praised as uniquely able to repel standing/besieging forces and to secure victory, linking ritual invitation with martial-cosmic prowess (Vṛtra-battles).

  3. Climax

The repeated summons—“at the midday pressing… drink the Soma”—functions as the peak imperative, asserting Indra’s immediate presence and efficacy in the rite.

  4. Where it settles

The poet grounds the request in precedent: Indra heard Atri, now hear Śyāvāśva; he protected Trasadasyu; thus he will again increase kṣatra and safeguard the sacrificer.

The deity: Indra

  • In the VedaIndra is the vajrī (thunderbolt-bearer), Vṛtrahan (slayer of Vṛtra), the foremost drinker of Soma, and the champion who answers hymns with swift help (ūti) and victory.
  • Cosmic functionHe releases the obstructed waters and light by shattering restraint, establishes victory and order for the sacrificer, and empowers kingship and communal strength.
  • Inner significanceIndra signifies the awakened force of will and courage that breaks inner obstruction—fear, inertia, and ‘siege-like’ pressures—so clarity, energy, and mastery (kṣatra) can rise.

The seer

  • Śyāvāśva ĀtreyaĀtreya (Atri-gotra) · An inspired singer within the Atri tradition, remembered for calling Indra to the Soma rite and for linking present sacrifice to Indra’s earlier aid to Atri and royal patrons like Trasadasyu.

Frequently Asked Questions

It calls Indra to the midday Soma-pressing and asks him to drink the Soma and bring his full protection and help to the sacrificer.

Vṛtra represents obstruction. By recalling Indra’s Vṛtra-slaying, the hymn reminds listeners that he can remove obstacles and secure victory in both ritual and life.

Śyāvāśva is the singer associated with this hymn in the Ātreya tradition. Atri is invoked as an earlier seer whom Indra heard—so the hymn asks Indra to respond now in the same way.
