Adhyaya 77 — Sanjna’s Withdrawal from Surya: The Birth of Yama and Yamuna, and the Emergence of Chhaya
मार्कण्डेय उवाच यमस्यैतद्वचः श्रुत्वा भगवान्स्तिमिरापहः ।
छायासंज्ञां समाहूय पप्रच्छ क्व गतेति सा ॥
mārkaṇḍeya uvāca yamasyaitad vacaḥ śrutvā bhagavāṃs timirāpahaḥ /
chāyāsaṃjñāṃ samāhūya papraccha kva gateti sā
মার্কণ্ডেয় বললেন: যমের এই কথা শুনে, ভগবান সূর্য ছায়াকে (যিনি সংজ্ঞা নামে পরিচিতা) ডেকে জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন, 'সে (সংজ্ঞা) কোথায় গিয়েছে?'

When moral expectations are violated (a ‘mother’ cursing), the wise investigate root causes; discernment (viveka) is required to restore dharma rather than judging only by surface roles.
Vaṃśānucarita: the inquiry initiates the disclosure that corrects the genealogical and moral narrative.
Sūrya as ‘dispeller of darkness’ represents illuminating knowledge that exposes Chāyā (shadow/appearance) and retrieves Saṃjñā (true recognition), i.e., jñāna removing avidyā.
