Adhyaya 40 — The Yogin’s Impediments (Upasargas), Subtle Concentrations, and the Eight Siddhis
प्रतिभान्ति यदस्येति प्रातिभः स तु योगिनः । शब्दार्थानखिलान् वेत्ति शब्दं गृह्णाति चैव यत् ॥
pratibhānti yad asyeti prātibhaḥ sa tu yoginaḥ | śabdārthān akhilān vetti śabdaṃ gṛhṇāti caiva yat ||
যেহেতু তার কাছে সবই ‘প্রতিভাত’ হয়ে প্রকাশিত হয়, তাই যোগীর ক্ষেত্রে একে ‘প্রাতিভ’ বলা হয়; সে সকল শব্দ ও অর্থ জানে এবং বাক্য/বাণীর অন্তর্নিহিত তাৎপর্যও ধারণ করে।

Extraordinary comprehension is not equated with liberation. The yogin must not mistake linguistic/semantic omniscience for the cessation of ego and craving.

Mastery over ‘śabda–artha’ hints at a subtle alignment with vāk-śakti (power of speech). Esoterically, it is a threshold where mantra-like potency can arise—hence its danger as a distraction.
