कण्वोपदेशः—नश्वरबलविवेकः तथा मातलिगुणकेश्याः आख्यानारम्भः

“उस समय सर्वथा निर्भय, उदार एवं विद्वान ब्राह्मणोंने बारंबार आत्मप्रशंसा करनेवाले उन नरेशको मना किया ।।
niṣidhyamāno 'py asakṛt pṛcchaty eva sa vai dvijān | atimānaḥ śriyā mattaṃ tam ūcur brāhmaṇās tadā ||
বারবার নিষেধ করা সত্ত্বেও সেই রাজা ব্রাহ্মণদের কাছে বারংবার প্রশ্ন করতেই থাকল। অতিরিক্ত অহংকারে স্ফীত এবং ঐশ্বর্যের মদে উন্মত্ত হয়ে সে থামল না। একই প্রশ্ন পুনরাবৃত্তি করতে দেখে বেদতত্ত্বদর্শী মহাত্মা তপস্বী ব্রাহ্মণরা ক্রোধে জ্বলে উঠলেন এবং তাকে এইভাবে বললেন—
