Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Appraisal of Strength and Preference for Śama
bhīṣma-droṇa-kṛpādīnāṃ bhayād aśani-sannibham | rirakṣiṣantaḥ saṃrambhaṃ gamiṣyantīti me matiḥ ||
When adharma grows powerful through formidable champions, the protection of the righteous is portrayed as drawing even higher forces into decisive opposition; moral order (dharma) is not merely personal but cosmic, and protection of the just may require stern, thunderbolt-like resolve.
Vaiśampāyana expresses his view that, fearing the might of Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Kṛpa and allied warriors, the gods—intent on safeguarding the Pāṇḍavas—will become fiercely enraged against Bhīṣma’s side, with anger likened to a thunderbolt.
