Educational Q&A

The verse teaches that lineage does not uniformly determine virtue or strength: within the same family, individuals may differ radically—some lacking courage and capability, others possessing great valor—just as a single tree can have both fruitful and fruitless branches.

Vaiśampāyana, as narrator, offers a general moral observation in the Udyoga Parva context: while describing tensions leading toward war, he highlights the natural diversity of human qualities within the same clan, preparing the listener to understand contrasting behaviors among related figures.
