Sañjaya’s Envoy-Speech on Peace
नाश्रेयान् वै प्रावारान् संविवस्ते कथं त्वस्मान् सम्प्रणुदेत् कुरुभ्य: । अन्रैव स्यादबुधस्यैव काम: प्राय: शरीरे हृदयं दुनोति
sañjaya uvāca |
nāśreyān vai prāvārān saṃvivaste kathaṃ tv asmān sampranudet kurubhyaḥ |
anṛ eva syād abudhasyaiva kāmaḥ prāyaḥ śarīre hṛdayaṃ dunoti ||
সঞ্জয় বললেন—যার পুণ্য নেই, সে উৎকৃষ্ট চাদর-বাস্ত্রও পরতে পারে না; তবে সে কীভাবে আমাদের কুরুদেশ থেকে তাড়াতে পারত? আসলে কামনা কেবল অবিবেকীরই; তা প্রায়ই দেহের ভিতর হৃদয়কে দগ্ধ করে।
संजय उवाच
Desire (kāma) is portrayed as a mark of folly that agitates the inner heart-mind; true standing and success are linked to merit and right conduct, not to craving.
Sañjaya comments on political power and moral worth: he argues that without merit one cannot even enjoy basic signs of prosperity, so it would be impossible to expel ‘us’ from Kuru territory; he then criticizes craving as the affliction of the unwise.
