Adhyāya 128 — Proposal to Restrain Keśava; Sātyaki’s Warning and Vidura–Dhṛtarāṣṭra Counsel

na yuddhe tāta kalyāṇaṃ na dharmārtho kutaḥ sukham | na cāpi vijayo nityaṃ mā yuddhe ceta ādhithāḥ ||

Educational Q&A

War is not a dependable means to attain welfare: it endangers dharma, does not guarantee artha, cannot yield stable sukha, and even victory is uncertain; therefore one should not be mentally committed to war.

In the Udyoga Parva’s pre-war deliberations, Vaiśampāyana narrates counsel that discourages embracing war, stressing its moral and practical uncertainty as tensions move toward the Kurukṣetra conflict.
