व्यास उवाच
The verse teaches gṛhastha-dharma: cultivate love and fidelity within marriage, practice sense-restraint (becoming jitendriya), refrain from fault-finding, and renounce quarrels—especially with those who deserve protection, respect, or care (elders, children, the sick, guests, teachers, parents, and dependents). Such restraint and harmony are presented as a means to freedom from sin.
In Śānti Parva’s instruction on dharma after the war, Vyāsa delivers ethical guidance. Here he lists categories of people with whom a householder should not contend, emphasizing social and familial concord as a practical discipline leading to moral purification.
