नैशात्मकं तमो विद्यात् त्रिगुणं मोहसंज्ञितम् । अधर्मलक्षणं चैव नियतं पापकर्मसु । तामसं रूपमेतत् तु दृश्यते चापि सड्भतम्
naiśātmakaṃ tamo vidyāt triguṇaṃ mohasaṃjñitam | adharmalakṣaṇaṃ caiva niyataṃ pāpakarmasu | tāmasaṃ rūpam etat tu dṛśyate cāpi saṅghatam ||
তমকে রাত্রিস্বরূপ অন্ধকারময় বলে জানবে—ত্রিগুণের এক গুণ, যার নাম মোহ। তা অধর্মের লক্ষণ এবং পাপকর্মে রত লোকদের মধ্যে স্থির প্রবণতা হিসেবে নিশ্চিতভাবে থাকে। এটাই তামস রূপ; এবং তা অন্য গুণের সঙ্গে মিশ্রিত অবস্থাতেও দেখা যায়।
