The Duty to Fulfill Promised Gifts
यां रात्रि जायते जीवो यां रात्रि च विनश्यति । एतस्मिन्नन्तरे यद् यत् सुकृतं तस्य भारत
bhīṣma uvāca |
yāṃ rātri jāyate jīvo yāṃ rātri ca vinaśyati |
etasminn antare yad yat sukṛtaṃ tasya bhārata bharatanandana |
ভীষ্ম বললেন—হে ভরতবংশের আনন্দ! যে রাত্রিতে জীব জন্মায় এবং যে রাত্রিতে সে বিনষ্ট হয়, এই দুই রাত্রির মধ্যবর্তী সময়ে জীবনে সে যে যে পুণ্যকর্ম করে—যজ্ঞ, দান ও তপস্যায় যা কিছু অর্জন করে—প্রতিজ্ঞাভঙ্গের পাপে তা সবই নষ্ট হয়ে যায়।
