श्रीराजोवाच देवासुरनृणां सर्गो नागानां मृगपक्षिणाम् । सामासिकस्त्वया प्रोक्तो यस्तु स्वायम्भुवेऽन्तरे ॥ १ ॥ तस्यैव व्यासमिच्छामि ज्ञातुं ते भगवन् यथा । अनुसर्गं यया शक्त्या ससर्ज भगवान् पर: ॥ २ ॥
śrī-rājovāca devāsura-nṛṇāṁ sargo nāgānāṁ mṛga-pakṣiṇām sāmāsikas tvayā prokto yas tu svāyambhuve ’ntare
শ্রীরাজা বললেন—স্বায়ম্ভুব মন্বন্তরে দেব, অসুর, মানুষ, নাগ, পশু ও পাখির যে সৃষ্টি হয়েছিল, আপনি তা সংক্ষেপে বলেছেন। এখন, হে ভগবন, আমি তারই বিস্তৃত বিবরণ জানতে চাই; আর জানতে চাই, পরম ভগবান কোন শক্তিতে অনুসৃষ্টি (দ্বিতীয় সৃষ্টি) রচনা করলেন।
