Suta Goswami (narrating the Shiva Purana teaching as a moral-ethical injunction within the Umāsaṃhitā discourse)
Tattva Level: pasha
Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
It teaches that merely listening to the defamation of the virtuous is a grave sin: it pollutes the mind through the ear-gate, obstructs bhakti, and strengthens pāśa (bondage) instead of moving the soul toward Śiva (Pati) and liberation.
Linga-worship is grounded in purity of conduct—especially speech and hearing. By rejecting sat-nindā, the devotee safeguards śraddhā and maintains inner śauca, making devotion to Saguna Shiva (and reverence to the Linga as His sacred mark) steady and fruitful.
Practice deliberate restraint of hearing and speech: avoid gatherings that indulge in nindā, adopt a vrata of anindā (non-slander), and redirect the mind to japa of the Panchākṣarī “Om Namaḥ Śivāya” for purification.
