Inside Sukta 172

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A call for the Maruts’ radiant movement and radiant help—inviting their brilliant, irresistible presence.

  2. Development

The hymn turns protective: may the reddening dart and the striking stone be driven far away from the worshipper’s path.

  3. Climax

A vivid clearing image—like removing a fallen mass of grass—asking the Maruts to clear the whole surrounding field of obstruction.

  4. Where it settles

A final upward-turning blessing: “make us rise upward for life,” setting the devotee on an ascending, life-giving course.

The deity: Maruts

  • In the VedaThe Maruts are the youthful storm-host—resplendent, swift-moving, loud, and generous—often pictured with flashing brilliance and weapon-like energy, accompanying Indra and stirring the skies with wind and thunder.
  • Cosmic functionThey animate the atmosphere: raising winds, bringing rain, dispersing obstacles, and enforcing ṛta by driving away hostile forces and clearing the path for vitality and prosperity.
  • Inner significanceThey symbolize surging life-force and courageous clarity that breaks inertia—an inner ‘storm’ that scatters fear, removes psychic clutter, and lifts consciousness upward toward strength and right direction.

The seer

  • AnuktaThis hymn is transmitted without a firmly preserved seer-name; such anukta attributions commonly occur in short Marut invocations where the focus is on the deity’s swift protection rather than the poet’s self-identification.
