Sita’s Lament and Resolve under Threat
सुखाद्विहीनं बहुदुःखपूर्णमिदं तु नूनं हृदयं स्थिरं मे।विशीर्यते यन्न सहस्रधाऽद्य वज्राहतं शृङ्गमिवाचलस्य।।5.28.4।।
sukhādvihīnaṃ bahuduḥkhapūrṇam idaṃ tu nūnaṃ hṛdayaṃ sthiraṃ me |
viśīryate yan na sahasradhā ’dya vajrāhataṃ śṛṅgam ivācalasya ||5.28.4||
সুখবিহীন আৰু বহু দুখেৰে পূৰ্ণ, মোৰ এই হৃদয় নিশ্চয়েই কঠিন; কিয়নো আজিো ই সহস্ৰ টুকুৰাত ভাঙি নপৰে—বজ্ৰাহত পৰ্বতৰ শিখৰৰ দৰে।
"Even though I am devoid of joy, and living in deep agony, my heart bursts not into a thousand pieces like the summit of a mountain hit by thunderbolt (lightning).
Sita speaks truthfully about her inner condition—joyless and overwhelmed by sorrow—without exaggeration or concealment, showing the Ramayana’s emphasis on honest self-assessment even in suffering.
Her firmness indicates steadfast adherence to dharma—enduring adversity without moral collapse—suggesting that inner restraint and patience are part of righteous conduct even when circumstances are unjust.
