Bhīmasena’s Assertion of Strength
Udyoga Parva, Adhyāya 74
niḥśvasann agnivat tena saṃtaptaḥ svena manyunā | apraśāntamanā bhīma sadhūma iva pāvakaḥ ||
Uncontrolled anger (manyu) first burns the person who holds it: it disturbs the mind’s peace and clouds judgment, like smoke covering a flame. The verse implicitly commends inner pacification as an ethical necessity before righteous action.
Vaiśaṃpāyana describes Bhīma’s inner state during the tense pre-war negotiations: he repeatedly sighs and is visibly consumed by indignation, remaining mentally unsettled, compared to a smoky fire.
