Adhyāya 128 — Proposal to Restrain Keśava; Sātyaki’s Warning and Vidura–Dhṛtarāṣṭra Counsel
निगृहा सुहृदां मन्युं शाधि राज्यं यथोचितम् । स्वमंशं पाण्डुपुत्रेभ्य: प्रदाय भरतर्षभ
nigṛhā suhṛdāṁ manyuṁ śādhi rājyaṁ yathocitam | svam aṁśaṁ pāṇḍuputrebhyaḥ pradāya bharatarṣabha ||
বৈশম্পায়নে ক’লে—সুহৃদসকলৰ ক্ৰোধ সংযত কৰি যথোচিতভাৱে ৰাজ্য শাসন কৰা। হে ভরতবৃষভ, পাণ্ডুপুত্ৰসকলক তেওঁলোকৰ স্বভাগ দিয়া।
वैशम्पायन उवाच
A ruler should master anger—especially the collective wrath of supporters—and govern according to propriety (dharma). Justice requires granting others their due share, since rightful distribution prevents moral decline and political catastrophe.
In the Udyoga Parva’s tense pre-war context, counsel is voiced urging the Kuru ruler to restrain factional anger and avert conflict by giving the Pāṇḍavas their legitimate portion of the kingdom.
