A disciplined person does not dwell on mutual attachments and old relational bonds (“I love you, you love me, they love me, I love them”). Such mental fixation is an entanglement; restraint means not feeding it, preserving clarity and steadiness in dharmic conduct.
In the Shanti Parva’s instruction on righteous living and inner discipline, Bhishma advises the listener that one should not mentally rehearse or cling to past associations and reciprocal affections; the self-controlled avoid cultivating these thoughts.
