Indra’s Envy at Pṛthu’s Aśvamedha and Brahmā’s Intervention
False Renunciation Exposed
tat tasya cādbhutaṁ karma vicakṣya paramarṣayaḥ nāmadheyaṁ dadus tasmai vijitāśva iti prabho
In Canto 4, Chapter 19, the sages witness King Pṛthu’s extraordinary deed connected with the sacrificial horse and honor him by naming him “Vijitāśva,” meaning “conqueror of the horse.”
Because they directly observed his astonishing accomplishment in relation to the yajña-horse and publicly recognized his prowess and righteousness by awarding a title that memorialized the event.
This verse highlights that lasting honor comes from visible, beneficial actions recognized by wise and impartial people—encouraging integrity, responsibility, and service over mere self-promotion.
