The Greatness of Bhasma, Rudrākṣa, and the Name of Śiva
sa vaidikaḥ sa puṇyātmā sa dhanyassa budho mataḥ | śivanāmajapāsakto yo nityaṃ bhuvi mānava
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
Significance: Frames nāma-japa as the essence of ‘vaidika’ life: true Vedicness is measured by sustained devotion and inner transformation rather than mere ritual identity.
Type: panchakshara
Role: teaching
It declares that sustained devotion to Śiva’s Name is the true mark of Vedic living—purifying the soul and ripening wisdom, because Nama-japa aligns the individual (paśu) toward Śiva (Pati) and loosens bondage (pāśa).
Name-japa is a direct form of Saguna devotion: the devotee approaches Śiva through His accessible Name, often performed alongside Liṅga-pūjā, making inner remembrance and outer worship mutually supportive.
Daily Śiva-nāma japa—especially the Panchākṣarī mantra “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”—done with steadiness (nityam), ideally with a japa-mālā (often Rudrākṣa) and a focused, devotional mind.
