Śiva’s Freedom from Bondage and His Cosmic Support
āśayairnāpi saṃbandhaḥ saṃskāraiḥ karmaṇāmapi | bhogaiśca bhogasaṃskāraiḥ kālatritayagocaraiḥ
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pasha
Shiva Form: Sadāśiva
Sthala Purana: Not a Jyotirliṅga legend; it enumerates bondage-structures (āśaya/saṃskāra/bhoga) as time-bound, implying their sublation in Śiva-realization.
Significance: Frames the pilgrim’s inner tīrtha: recognizing saṃskāras and bhoga-vāsanās as kāla-traya-gocara (time-bound) aids detachment and purification.
Type: stotra
Role: teaching
Cosmic Event: Implicit reference to kāla-traya (past-present-future) as the domain of bondage.
It teaches that Shiva (Pati), as the supreme consciousness, is untouched by āśayas and saṃskāras that bind the soul (paśu) and operate through time; realizing this transcendence is central to liberation.
Linga worship trains the mind to move from time-bound qualities and karmic conditioning toward the timeless reality signified by the Linga—Saguna devotion culminating in insight into Shiva’s nirguna freedom from impressions and enjoyment.
Meditate on Shiva as the witness beyond past-present-future while repeating the Panchakshara (Om Namaḥ Śivāya), offering bhasma (Tripuṇḍra) as a reminder of dispassion toward bhoga and its saṃskāras.
