Bāṇāsura’s Praise of Śiva and Petition for Battle
sakhyā kṛtātmano doṣaṃ sā vyāsa smāritā punaḥ | sarvaṃ tatpūrvavṛttāṃtaṃ tato dṛṣṭvā ca sā bhavat

The verse highlights inner accountability: when one recognizes one’s self-caused fault and clearly sees the chain of past events, repentance and right understanding arise—an essential step toward purification and alignment with Shiva-dharma.
In Shaiva practice, honest remembrance and confession of one’s shortcomings prepares the devotee for worthy approach to Saguna Shiva in Linga-worship—purifying intent (bhāva) so devotion becomes steady and transformative.
A practical takeaway is daily self-review (ātma-vicāra) before worship: recall actions, acknowledge faults, and then offer mantra-japa (e.g., “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) with a corrected resolve; if following ritual, do it after simple purification such as Tripuṇḍra-bhasma application.
