Adhyaya 39 — Funeral Rites
विवर्धयति नारोहेत्तस्माद् भूमिमनिर्जिताम् ।
प्राणानामुपसंरोधात् प्राणायाम इति स्मृतः ॥
vivardhayati nārohet tasmād bhūmim anirjitām / prāṇānām upasaṃrodhāt prāṇāyāma iti smṛtaḥ //
إنها (الممارسة) تزيد تلك المتاعب؛ لذلك لا ينبغي الصعود إلى مرحلة غير مُتغلَّبٍ عليها. ولأنها كبحُ الأنفاس الحيوية، ذُكرت باسم «براناياما» (prāṇāyāma).

The passage combines definition with prudence: prāṇāyāma is regulation of prāṇa, but it must be undertaken on a stable foundation; otherwise it amplifies latent disorders rather than removing them.

Restraint of prāṇa concentrates life-force; if the ‘ground’ (mind-body purification) is not prepared, intensified prāṇa energizes unresolved vāsanās, experienced as agitation or illness.
