Adhyaya 19 — Kartavirya Arjuna at Dattatreya’s Ashram: Boons, Sovereignty, and Vaishnava Praise
स एव ग्रामपालोऽभूत् पशुपालः स एव च ।
क्षेत्रपालः स एवासीद् द्विजातीनाञ्च रक्षिताः ॥
sa eva grāmapālo 'bhūt paśupālaḥ sa eva ca / kṣetrapālaḥ sa evāsīd dvijātīnāñca rakṣitā
هو نفسه صار حامي القرى؛ وهو نفسه كان الراعي؛ وهو نفسه كان حارس الحقول؛ وكان أيضًا حامي «ذوي الميلادين» (دْفِجَا).

Rajadharma is defined as direct, comprehensive protection: the king safeguards livelihood (fields), wealth (cattle), settlement (villages), and learning/ritual order (dvijas).
Vaṃśānucarita with dharma-upadeśa: the king’s reign is described through the functions he fulfills for society.
The four protections can be read as guarding the four supports of a civilized life—community, resources, sustenance, and sacred knowledge—showing sovereignty as integrative care.
