The verse highlights ethical discernment in generosity: one should not surrender vital protections merely due to pressure or flattery. Sūrya urges Karṇa to use reasoned, courteous, and persuasive speech to prevent an unjust or strategically harmful request, showing that dharma includes prudent self-guarding and intelligent dialogue.
Sūrya warns Karṇa that Indra (Purandara) intends to obtain Karṇa’s divine earrings (and by implication his natural protections). Sūrya instructs Karṇa to counter Indra’s plan by offering well-reasoned arguments and sweet, tactful words so that Indra abandons the attempt to take the kuṇḍalas.
