Sāvitrī–Satyavān Vivāha: Kanyāpradāna and Āśrama-Śīla (सावित्री-सत्यवान्विवाहः)
पतेयं गिरिशृज्भाद् वा विशेयं वा हुताशनम् | रामं भर्तारमुत्सज्य न त्वहं त्वां कथंचन
pateyaṁ giriśṛṅgād vā viśeyaṁ vā hutāśanam | rāmaṁ bhartāram utsṛjya na tv ahaṁ tvāṁ kathaṁcana ||
Markandeya said: “I would rather fall from a mountain peak, or enter the blazing fire; but having abandoned Rama, my husband, I will not accept you—under any circumstance.”
मार्कण्डेय उवाच
The verse upholds steadfast marital fidelity and dharma: one should not abandon a righteous commitment for fear, coercion, or temptation, even at the cost of life.
Mārkaṇḍeya quotes a woman’s firm refusal: she declares she would choose death (falling from a peak or entering fire) rather than forsake her husband Rāma and accept another man.
